Mayor Edward I. Koch, an Inner Circle Show Favorite, Dies at 88

Ed Koch lived on stage. And one of his favorites was the stage he dominated in his many song-and-dance rebuttals to the Inner Circle over a tenure of three terms as mayor. The former mayor died Feb 1, 2013 after a lengthy illness. He was 88.
The Inner Circle membership and officers join our fellow New Yorkers in mourning the passing of one of New York’s most colorful, fiery and accomplished mayors.
Despite battles with city labor unions, fiscal woes and corruption scandals - and in spite of his often cantankerous relationship with Room 9 - Edward Irving Koch never missed his chance to sling back the barbs at the annual Inner Circle show. In a run from 1978 -1989, he brought wit, energy and comedic clout to our show in what he probably considered yet one more opportunity to tell us all “How’m I doin’?”
Whether wearing a pigeon on his head or gliding across stage with Bebe Neuwirth, Tommy Tune and other Broadway greats, Koch looked forward, loved and promoted our show and our cause. Just last year in a video we produced, Koch referred to the Inner Circle as “one of the best shows in town.”
